It's no secret that Republican State Attorney
General, Tom Corbett is viewed by many as the
front runner in the upcoming election for
Governor.  However, Corbett's future success
appears to hinge on convictions in the
"Bonusgate" trials.  The acquittal of Sean Ramaley
was seen by many as an indication that Corbett's
cases were not as strong as he wanted some to
believe.  Additionally, the group who recently
pleaded guilty, are now turning evidence in the
Mike Veon case, which would appear to be what
was always intended.  So what does all this mean?
For insiders it means that Mike Veon better go
down hard or Tom Corbett may actually be serving
a full second term as Attorney General.
Rumors are rampant that the Republicans have
found a candidate to run against State
Representative Mike Sturla (D-96).  Sturla has
been called to testify in the Mike Veon trial and the
question on everyone's lips is--why?  Still the very
popular Sturla would be hard to beat unless
something very big happens.  For his part, Sturla
told reporters that he has "no idea" why he is
being called to testify.  Chances are we'll find out
sooner rather than later.
There is some interesting "behind the scenes"
maneuvering going on in the race to fill the State
Representative seat in the 41st District.  Right
now, for those of you who are not there, you
should be glad you're not a committee person.
The decision by Democrat Keith McCall not to run
for reelection has thrown the House of
Representatives into some turmoil.  McCall, seen
as someone who tried to respect both sides of the
aisle was the Speaker of the House and his
decision means that position will become an open
one.  Republicans, hoping to regain the majority in
November are thrilled with also regaining the
Speaker's position.  Democrats, scrambling to hold
on to their majority are already jockeying to find a
suitable replacement for McCall.  They have a
huge problem however.  Todd Eachus is the
natural successor, but Eachus has been linked to
"Bonusgate" and privately many, even from his
own party, feel he represents too much of the
"good old boy" mentality that has led to the
perception that legislators are corrupt.  Tales of
his 'tough guy" tactics are told up and down the
halls. Keith McCall is the lucky one.  Still young at
50, he's served for 27 years and will get
approximately $90,000 a year in retirement.   Plus
he leaves with his good reputation intact a
significant accomplishment.
The 41st has many people watching and what they
are saying is: When will the Republican Caucus
learn?  Loyalty is an admirable trait but not if that
loyalty brings you in direct conflict with the duties
of your position.  It's a simple mathematical
equation:  Working for candidate + employed by
the caucus = conflict of interest.  This has
happened before and usually those "assisted"
candidates lose. Maybe it's time for someone in
authority to step up and say enough is enough.
Could Charlie Smithgall run for another office?
You just might live to see it, but it might not be
what you think.
