There are 2 questions swirling around Governor
hopeful Tom Corbett.  Is he really a fiscal
conservative & is he really pro-life?

Corbett now lists himself as a pro-life candidate,
but newspaper archive searches do indeed
support that in the past he was pro-choice.
Viewed in 1998 as a strong candidate to challenge
then Republican Arlen Specter for his Senate seat,
Corbett was seen by a large contingent of
conservative Republicans as too much like
Specter to appease the "hard right".  Eventually he
decided not to run.   His announcement of an
official run for Governor last year also supported a
new position as pro-life along with an adjustment
of his less conservative views.

Tom Corbett is also taking a hit for his recent
appearance before the State Senate to argue
against the money allocated for the Attorney
General's office in the 2009-2010 budget.  Corbett
said he'd have to cut 32 jobs because there is a
decrease in funding.  The $85.6 million allocation
is a mere 1% less than the current budget
according to the
Philadelphia Inquirer
The decision by Democrat Keith McCall not to run
for reelection has thrown the House of
Representatives into some turmoil.  McCall, seen
as someone who tried to respect both sides of the
aisle was the Speaker of the House and his
decision means that position will become an open
one.  Republicans, hoping to regain the majority in
November are thrilled with also regaining the
Speaker's position.  Democrats, scrambling to hold
on to their majority are already jockeying to find a
suitable replacement for McCall.  They have a
huge problem however.  Todd Eachus is the
natural successor, but Eachus has been linked to
"Bonusgate" and privately many, even from his
own party, feel he represents too much of the
"good old boy" mentality that has led to the
perception that legislators are corrupt.  Tales of
his 'tough guy" tactics are told up and down the
halls. Keith McCall is the lucky one.  Still young at
50, he's served for 27 years and will get
approximately $90,000 a year in retirement.   Plus
he leaves with his good reputation intact a
significant accomplishment.
Ah the 96th or as we like to call it the "here we go
again" race.  The Republicans have found a
candidate to run against Representative Mike
Sturla.  His name is Tom Garman & we'd like to ask
him who will be running his campaign.  We'd like to
ask some other things too but apparently he
doesn't return phone calls to certain reporters
(us).  A concerned GOP insider who heard our
lament assured us that we are on Mr. Garman's
"call back someday" list, but we're not holding our
breath.  C'est la vie!

Still there are those persistent rumors as to who
will be running his campaign.  Okay let's see.  One
thing we can be sure of....it won't be anyone who
this applies to, right?

"What No Civil Service Employee Can Do*:

began while on leave or furlough.

Engage in almost any political campaign
activity, other than making monetary
contributions (Certain permissible activities
are on page 1 of this memo.)

Engage in any of the political activities
prohibited by the State Civil Service Act (see
the State Civil Service Commission (SCSC)
Enclosure 1 to Management Directive 580.25,

Activity for Classified Service Employees," or

state.  Right?  Right?  Can anyone hear me?
